Huddersfield Giants beat 12 man Widnes Vikings 28-16 to claim just their second victory of the season.
The Giants were cruising early on as they raced into a 20-0 lead thanks to tries from Ryan Hinchcliffe, Jake Mamo and Oliver Roberts.
The game then turned on an incident that could have repercussions for the Vikings as Wellington Albert was sent off for an alleged cannonball tackle on Jermaine McGillvary- who went straight down the other end and extended Huddersfield’s lead.
However, three second half tries from Joe Mellor, Matt Whitley and Stefan Marsh fired the match right back into the balance as Widnes were looking for a third win of the season.
But Danny Brough’s game management came into fruition as he kicked two penalties to kill the game off once and for all. Although they were made to work for it as Hinchcliffe was sin binned late on.
Huddersfield will be hoping this can be the result that can inspire them to climb up the table. The Giants host Hull KR on Thursday.
As for Widnes, it was a bitterly disappointing night for them, in a game they identified as one they could win for sure. They will hope to bounce back next week when they travel to Wakefield Trinity next Saturday.
