O’Brien leaves Salford for Toronto

Fullback Gareth O’Brien has left the Salford Red Devils and will join the Toronto Wolfpack, subject to RFL approval.

League Express and BBC Radio Manchester broke the news last night and the club confirmed it this afternoon in a statement.

The Ireland international will forever go down in Salford folklore after scoring the golden point extra time winning drop goal that kept the Red Devils in the Super League against Hull KR in 2016.

The club said the Wolfpack initially bid for O’Brien last week as neither club or player were interested. Then the next day, the players representatives came and said he did want the move after all. Toronto then came in with a second bid that was accepted.

O’Brien has accepted personal terms with the Canadian club and can confirm the deal once the RFL approves it.
