Pilks beat St Pats to edge closer to promotion
Pilkington Recs have moved to within one win of promotion to the NCL Premier Division after a 16-4 win over Wigan St Patricks at Ruskin Drive.
The hosts took the lead after just 11 minutes as Andy Nisbet, just seconds after coming on, managed to get the ball down after Pats fumbled a kick. Kyran Knapper converted to make it a six point advantage.
The first half was incredibly tight, shown by Pilks taking the two points twice from penalties, which Knapper converted. The second was from the halfway line to send them in at the break ten points ahead.
With the match still hanging on a knife edge, the leaders then went and killed the game as Alex McClurg went from dummy half and scored just after the hour. Knapper converted to bring Pilks up to 16.
Wigan had a lot of pressure in Pilks’ half of the pitch and they eventually made it count just after McClurg’s try as Craig Thomas finished off a good move in the corner. The conversion went just past the post, meaning they still trailed by two converted scores.
This was the final score of the game and Pilks held on for a big win that puts them back in front by three points at the top of NCL Division One. They only need one win from their final two games to confirm promotion. They could do it against Stanningley on August 31.
As for St Pats, they remain in sixth, and miss the chance to gain an advantage in the race to secure a home playoff. They welcome York Acorn in a huge clash on August 31.
