Former rugby league star Israel Folau could be in line to return to the sport to represent Tonga in the winter tests.
Folau was sacked by Australian Rugby Union over homophobic tweets he put out earlier this year.
The Tongan rugby league board had released a statement saying Folau had been approved to return, but the RLIF have said this is not the case.
According to the initial statement, Israel’s brother John could also return to the sport, having also made a living out of both codes of rugby.
It is the latest story surrounding Tonga Rugby League after a tumultuous time recently.
First, players threatened to go on strike if they sacked Head Coach Kristian Woolf, then they decided to sack him and replace him with Frank Endacott, who hasn’t coached since suffering relegation with Widnes Vikings in 2005, and now this.
It will be interesting to see how the Tongans operate come the winter tests. They play Great Britain and Australia.
