Newcastle get past Dons to set up promotion showdown with Oldham

Newcastle Thunder put up a brilliant performance to beat Doncaster 34-4 at Kingston Park to set up a League One promotion final at Oldham.

The damage was done in the first half. as the Thunder produced three tries in the first half an hour.

Efforts from Kieran Gill, Keal Carlile and Lewis Young, all of which were converted by Rhys Clarke to put the North East side ahead by 18 going into half time.

The Dons needed a response in the second half, and they got it as Rangi Chase showed his class to get over the try line, but the conversion was missed.

However, the reprieve was short as Gill added two more tries to complete his hat trick and Alex Clegg got in on the act to confirm a 30 point victory for the North East side.

That result means the Thunder travel to Oldham next Sunday, with the winner claiming a place in the Championship for next season.

As for Doncaster, they can reflect on what has been a very good season and they certainly looked like they were going to upset the applecart when they won at Newcastle a few weeks ago, but they couldn’t make it count after consecutive defeats against Oldham and Newcastle.

They will now go away and build for 2020 and will hope to go one step further and get into the second tier.
