Oldham hold off Newcastle to secure promotion
Oldham have secured promotion back to the Championship after an 18-14 win over Newcastle Thunder at Vestacre Stadium.
It was the Thunder who took the lead just shy of the 10 minute mark as Misi Taulapapa managed to get through. Rhys Clarke missed the conversion, but it was still a four point lead.
That missed kick would prove costly as just five minutes later, Oldham got through as Danny Langtree managed to score. Paul Crook kicked the conversion to put the hosts ahead by two points, a lead they would hold into the break.
Just like the first half, it was Newcastle who scored first as Joel Edwards managed to get through. Once again, Clarke missed the conversion, meaning the Thunder only led by two points.
Once again, Oldham took just five minutes to hit back as Zak McComb got in out wide. Crook scored the conversion to get Scott Naylor’s side ahead once more by four points.
But Newcastle were to hit back once more as Taulapapa grabbed his second. Clarke scored the conversion to put the Thunder back in front.
However, the Thunder once again couldn’t hang on as Jimmy Beckett managed to get over just five minutes later. Crook scored the conversion to put Oldham in front by four points.
That result means Oldham are back in the Championship after a year away. It was also the perfect way to send Scott Naylor out as Head Coach. They join Whitehaven in getting promotion to the second tier.
As for Newcastle, they can hold their heads up high with the knowledge that promotion surely isn’t too far away for them, if they keep playing the way they are. They will go again in 2020 hoping to go one better.
