England name Knights squad for Jamaica test

England Knights have named their squad for their upcoming test against Jamaica in Leeds.

12 players could be hoping to make their senior international debuts, including Wigan Warriors forward Morgan Smithies and Leeds Rhinos pair Harry Newman and Cameron Smith.

The trio represented England last year in the academy side against Australia schoolboys.

Smithies will be alongside teammates Sam Powell, Oliver Partington and Joe Greenwood in the side.

Newman and Smith are also joined by teammates Mikolaj Oledski and Cameron Smith from the Rhinos.

Huddersfield Giants also have several call ups, with Chester Butler, Kruise Leeming, Darnell McIntosh and Matty English.

Warrington Wolves and St Helens both have two call ups each with Tom Lineham, Toby King, Jack Ashworth and Danny Richardson called up respectively.

Completing the squad are Josh Bowden of Hull FC, Niall Evalds of Salford Red Devils and Greg Minikin, now of Hull KR.

“You can see from the Great Britain squad selected yesterday how much guys like Jack Hughes and Joe Philbin benefited from going to Papua New Guinea with the Knights last year.

“The other part of the pathway is young players such as Harry Newman, Harry Smith and Morgan Smithies coming up from the Academy after outstanding performances against the Australian Schoolboys last autumn, and then building on that with their club performances this season.

“The average age of the squad is only 22, and 12 of the 19 will be hoping to win their first Knights cap. That makes it an exciting squad to be around, and with attractive opposition in Jamaica, we hope Rugby League supporters will be keen to watch our next generation in international action next weekend.”

England Knights 19 man squad: Ashworth, Bowden, Butler, Evalds, Greenwood, King, Leeming, Lineham, McIntosh, Minikin, Newman, Oledzki, Partington, English, Powell, Richardson, H Smith, C Smith, Smithies.
