Lions start tour with Tonga test

Great Britain Lio9ns begin their tour of the southern hemisphere tomorrow morning UK time with a test against Tonga.

Tonga, headed by new St Helens Head Coach Kristian Woolf, stunned everyone at the 2017 World Cup when they reached the semi finals, and were millimetres away from beating England and reaching the final.

Since then, times have been a bit turbulent  and it threatened matters on the pitch as well. The Tongan National Rugby League Board put pressure on Woolf to resign, to the anger of players, who then threatened to go on strike.

Regardless, the board went ahead and replaced Woolf with Frank Endacott, a man who hadn’t been in coaching since being relegated from the Super League with Widnes Vikings in 2004.

However, after an intervention from the Tongan Prime Minister, the Tongan board was then overthrown and replaced with a new administration, who reinstated Woolf as Head Coach, and won back the trust of the players, who are back.

As for Great Britain, they are playing their first game since 2007, after a decision was made at the time to allow other nations to grow.

But now they are back, with a wealth of Super League and NRL talent to boast.

Also included are heritage players such as Blake Austin, Lachlan Coote and Jackson Hastings, who all qualify through their families.

It should make for a very interesting game.

The match kicks off at 8am UK time.
