Ganson to follow fathers footsteps

Josh Ganson is following in his fathers footsteps by becoming a referee.

Ganson has come to the end of his contract at Widnes Vikings, and has been refereeing junior games during the off season.

Ganson’s father Steve was a top level official for many years, and is now head of referees for the governing body.

His most recent game was a junior derby between Orrell St James and Ince Rose Bridge.

“I love playing and I’ll see what playing opportunities come up for next season in either Super League or Championship, but I am quite enjoying refereeing at the minute,” he said.

This news comes amid the RFL trying to get more former players to take up a whistle and referee.

Liam Moore, RFL recruitment and development manager, and match official, said: “It’s a tremendous boost for the game to see people with rich playing experience joining our ranks and we are keen to recruit even more.

“Anybody who’s interested can find out more on our website. You can also test yourself on the laws of the game.”
