No excuses for McNamara

Catalans Dragons Head Coach Steve McNamara did not want to make excuses for his side after their playoff defeat against St Helens.

The Dragons went down 48-2 against the Saints, who progress to next week’s Grand Final against Wigan Warriors.

A lot has been made about the sacrifices Catalans in particular have had to make.

However, McNamara did not want to use any excuses for his side.

He said: “I know the first half, we were down 24-2 but I wasnt concerned, I thought we still had a chance, but we got the second half really wrong.

“It is difficult to assess when you have been beaten like that in a major semi-final.

“We have put ourselves in a position where we finished in the top four. We gave ourselves an opportunity to get into a final but we were beaten by one of the best teams in the league.

“I think if we went out there, and put our best foot forward and we played well in the first half.

“I am not taking anything away from Saints, I am praising them. They have been the best team of the last three years.

“It could have been a step too far, but I cannot use it as an excuse. Last week after the semi- we got home at 4am, it feels you have jet lag on the Sunday, then on Monday we are back in training.

“We needed to be at our best, we ere ready but things fell apart in the second half.”
