Newcastle Thunder academy graduate Ollie Gowing has signed a new deal for the 2021 season.

An exciting talent, Gowing has already featured for the Thunder first team having made five appearances since making his debut against West Wales Raiders at the end of the 2018 season.

He earned further appearances by taking to the field against North Wales Crusaders and Coventry Bears in the league and York City Knights in the 1895 Cup during 2019 and impressed heavily during that year’s U19s academy season.

With his character seeing him become a major part of that team’s leadership group he was involved in the impressive pre-season win over Whitehaven at the start of 2020 and also featured in the clubs reserve side.

Upon signing a new deal, Gowing said: “I’m really happy I have been given the chance for another year at Thunder especially as my first year playing for the first team was cut short by Covid.

“It will be nice to get back to training and playing after almost a year off.

“I had a rough start last season due to injuries so hopefully this year I can really kick on, develop in training and hopefully get some more game time.”

Director of rugby Denis Betts added: “Ollie is a local product and we believe in his ability and expect him to be fighting strongly on the training field.

“He came into the group for 2020 and really pulled in the right directions and we’re looking forward to seeing more from him next year.

“Ollie provides us with options at hooker and with someone like Bob in the squad, that will only be a benefit to his development.”
