St Helens started their title defence with a 29-6 victory over Salford Red Devils at Headingley.

Saints took the lead early on, as Tommy Makinson rose high to collect a kick in the corner to score. Makinson then converted his own try to stretch their lead out to six points.

It was a close first half, Salford had passed up some opprtunities and Saints had two tries disallowed through Jonny Lomax and Mark Percival.

However, Saints would add to their lead, as Makinson scored a penalty after Harvey Livett was caught in an offside position, just before the half hour.

The champions then added to their advantage, after Kallum Watkins was adjudged to have lost the ball in his own half. From the resulting field position, Saints spread to Regan Grace, who scored in the corner. Makinson missed the conversion.

The hero of 2020 for Saints Jack Welsby then made his mark on the game by adding a drop goal once the hooter had gone for half time.

Salford struck first in the second half to give themselves a chance. Tui Lolohea’s ball out wide found Ken Sio, who went over in the corner. Krisnan Inu converted to reduce the deficit to seven points.

Just five minutes later, Saints re-established their lead, as Theo Fages’ kick found Mark Percival, who came down and scored. Makinson converted to put their lead up to 13 again.

The champions made the game safe, after Inu failed to collect a high kick, allowing Kevin Naiqama to go over unopposed. Makinson could not add the conversion.

There was time for one more for Saints, as Alex Walmsley picked up the ball and powered over from short range. Makinson added the conversion.

The Super League heads to the Totally Wicked Stadium next week. Saints face Hull KR; while Salford play Hull FC.
