Castleford Tigers started the new campaign with a 21-12 victory over Warrington Wolves at Headingley.

It took the Tigers just five minutes to break the deadlock, as Oliver Holmes picked up a loose ball and went over. Gareth O’Brien scored the conversion to make it a six-point lead.

Just four minutes later, Warrington hit back as a Stefan Ratchford kick out wide found Toby King, who rose highest to score. Stefan Ratchford missed the conversion, meaning they still trailed by two points.

Castleford extended their lead just before the half-hour, as Niall Evalds stepped his way over for his first try in Castleford colours. Peter Mata’utia missed the conversion.

The Tigers added their third try right on half-time as Jordan Turner took in a pass from Evalds for his first try for his new club. Mata’utia missed the conversion, meaning they had a 10-point lead at the break.

Warrington were able to strike back 12 minutes into the second half, as Daryl Clark managed to get through a gap and score. Ratchford missed the conversion, meaning the deficit stood at six points.

Five minutes later, Evalds and Turner combined once again, to send the latter over for his second try of the afternoon. Paul McShane scored the conversion, as the Tigers reached 20 points.

McShane then added a drop-goal late on to rubber stamp the victory.

However, the final word would go to Warrington, as Blake Austin supported a break to go through and score. Ratchford was again off-target with the conversion.

Both sides return to action at the Totally Wicked Stadium next week. Castleford face Leeds Rhinos, while Warrington take on Leigh Centurions.
