Halifax Panthers got their 2021 campaign off to the best start after beating London Broncos 47-14 at The Shay.
The Panthers took the lead after just four minutes, as Elliot Morris took in a short ball and powered over. Connor Robinson added the conversion for a six-point lead.
Things got worse for London 10 minutes later, as Josh Hodson was sent to the sin bin for kicking the ball away.
Just a minute later, Fax made the extra man count, as Liam Harris dummied his way through the defence and over the line. Robinson converted to double the Panthers’ advantage.
The Panthers then moved into a three-try lead just before the half hour, as Ed Barber managed to find his way over the line. Robinson made it three from three with the boot.
However, London hit straight back this time, Abbas Miski was put through to score in the corner. However, the conversion was missed by Ed Chmaberlain.
Just before the break, London received their second yellow card of the evening, as Greg Richards was put in the bin following a clash with Jacob Fairbank, who also went for 10.
Seconds into the second half, Halifax went further ahead as Barber latched onto a short ball and went over for his second. Robinson scored the conversion to put the Panthers 20 points ahead.
Five minutes later, London got their second try of the evening, as Miski grabbed his second out of dummy half. Chamberlain was off-target again with the conversion.
However, the Broncos could not build on that momentum, and it was the Panthers who scored next, as Zack McComb finished off a good move to score a try on his competitive debut. Robinson was off target for the first time.
McComb was also involved for Halifax’s next try on the hour. He managed to step his way free and put fullback Scott Grix over. Robinson added the conversion to extend their lead to 26 points.
With 13 minutes to go, Fax got their seventh try as Fairbank went over, after a good play from Robinson. The former York halfback then converted to get the Panthers up to 40 points.
London got another try back, as Tuoyo Egodo intercepted the ball and raced 80m to go over. Matty Fozard scored the conversion.
However, the final word would go to the Panthers as Conor McGrath finished off a good move in the corner. Robinson scored the conversion, and then added a drop-goal to rubber stamp a memorable return to Championship action for Halifax.
Both sides now have a week off before returning to Championship action. London travel to Toulouse, while Halifax face Bradford Bulls in Dewsbury.
