Dewsbury claim impressive Widnes win

Dewsbury Rams maintained their perfect start to the season after a 22-14 win over Widnes Vikings at the DCBL Stadium, a result which left the hosts winless.

Dewsbury drew first blood after five minutes, thanks to an early penalty from Paul Sykes after a tackle off the ball.

The Rams went further ahead 10 minutes later, after Deon Cross failed to take in a kick, allowing Joe Martin to collect a kick and score. Sykes scored the conversion to stretch the Rams lead out to eight points.

Soon after, Widnes hit back as Matty Smith spotted a gap and went over from short range. Jack Owens missed the converion, meaning the deficit was only halved.

Just past the half-hour, Dewsbury got their second try, as Keenan Tomlinson put Will Oakes in space out wide to score. Sykes was off-target with the conversion.

Widnes hit back just before half-time, as Lloyd Roby was put through by Jack Owens to score. Ste Tyrer missed the conversion attempt, meaning they trailed by eight at the break.

Just two minutes into the second half, Dewsbury struck again as Andy Gabriel found himself in space out wide and went over. Sykes scored the conversion attempt to stretch their lead out to 14 points.

Eight minutes later, Gabriel scored again after getting a high kick before Jayden Hatton to go over. Sykes hit the post with the conversion attempt.

Widnes would get one back before the end, as Ste Tyrer managed to barge his way over to get the Vikings into double figures. Tyrer then converted his own try.

That was not the end of the action either. Widnes would end with 12 men, with Danny Craven sent to the sin bin for dissent.

Both sides are back in Championship action next week. Widnes travel to Batley Bulldogs on Saturday, while Dewsbury Rams face Bradford Bulls in a battle between landlords and tenants.
