Woolf on back five dilemma

St Helens Head Coach Kristian Woolf has acknowledged the selection dilemma he has with the back five ahead of their game with Leigh Centurions on Friday.

Tommy Makinson is expected to return for Saints, and this leaves a bit of a dilemma, as either Kevin Naiqama, Jack Welsby or Mark Percival could be dropped to make way for him.

Naiqama and Welsby have started the season in good form, while Percival is still working his way back to full fitness.

Woolf said it is a good thing for his squad to have so much competition.

He said: “We’ve got a few really good outside backs, who are all performing well at the moment. There is a real competition for spots.

“Our back five last week did a really good job. They have all put their hands up to say they want to be in the side going forward, and that is what we want.

“If Tommy does come back, then we will have some decisions to make. But what I will say, is that you want that back five in the team somewhere and we will find a way to keep them all in the team.”
