Late drop-goal gives Huddersfield victory

1 0

Huddersfield Giants claimed their first Super League win under Ian Watson after a 14-13 win over Leeds Rhinos at The John Smith’s Stadium.

The Rhinos took the lead 15 minutes in. Bodene Thompson took in a short pass and went through a gap to score. Liam Sutcliffe missed the conversion attempt, meaning their lead stayed at four points.

Huddersfield managed to get themselves back in it on the half-hour. Aidan Sezer spotted a gap and got over for the try. He then added the conversion to put the Giants into a two-point lead.

The Giants extended their lead less than a minute into the second half. Sezer grabbed his second after finishing off a good break from Lee Gaskell to score. Sezer could not add the conversion meaning the Giants led by six points.

Four minutes later, they extended that lead with a Sezer penalty. The penalty was given after Leeds were punished for an obstruction.

Just before the hour, Leeds were able to hit back. Sutcliffe managed to break clear of the defence and set Ash Handley away to score. Rhyse Martin scored the conversion to bring the Rhinos back within two points.

Three minutes later, Leeds levelled through a Martin penalty. The penalty was given after Huddersfield were caught offside.

With the match on a knife edge, Leeds went for a drop-goal through Sutcliffe and scored. They led with five minutes left on the clock.

Huddersfield went for a short kick off, and got the ball back. From the resulting field position, Sezer was able to drop the Giants level.

The game seemed destined to be heading for Golden Point. Gaskell was able to kick a 35m drop-goal as the hooter sounded to give Huddersfield the victory.

The Giants are in cup action next week. They face St Helens at Headingley next Friday. As for Leeds, they have a week off before welcoming Wakefield Trinity to Headingley.
