Featherstone Rovers have kept their unbeaten start to the season in tact after a 16-12 win over York City Knights at the LNER Community Stadium.
York took the lead after five minutes. Riley Dean managed to break free and put halfback partner Matty Marsh over to score. Kieran Dixon scored the conversion to open up a six-point lead.
Seven minutes later, the visitors hit back. Gareth Gale got the ball out wide and beat a couple of tackle attempts to score. Nu Brown missed the conversion attempt, meaning they trailed by two points.
Featherstone’s cause wasn’t helped when forward John Davies was sent to the sin bin for an illegal tackle.
They were made to pay for that, as Liam Salter managed to get the ball down to extend York’s lead. Dixon scored the conversion to stretch their advantage out to eight points.
Rovers brought themselves back within a try going into the break. Brown scored a penalty right on half-time after York were caught offside.
Just before the hour, Featherstone got themselves right back into the game. Gale got the ball on the right-hand side and went through for his second. Brown missed the conversion attempt, to leave them trailing by two points.
However, that did not matter as Brown added a penalty soon after to level the scores.
With the game hanging on a knife edge, Featherstone got the crucial try. Dean went for a drop-goal attempt, which was charged down, and Craig Hall picked up and ran all the way to score. Brown missed the conversion attempt.
Both sides return to action next week. York travel to Widnes Vikings next Sunday, while Featherstone welcome Oldham next Monday.
