Huddersfield Giants came through a nervy finish to get their Women’s Super League campaign off to a winning start after a 28-26 win over Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Huddersfield managed to draw first blood after just three minutes. A cutout pass found Amelia Brown in space out wide, and she scored in the corner. Francesca Townend’s conversion attempt just went across the posts.

However, Warrington were able to hit back five minutes later. A nice offload managed to get Georgia Sutherland into space, and she managed to get over. Michelle Davis’ conversion attempt landed just short.

Just before the 20 minute mark, Wire managed to turn the game around. Armani Pitt came onto a short ball to crash over and make Warrington’s possession count. Davis was on target with the conversion attempt, to give the Wire a six-point lead.

Warrington then extended their lead with a little slice of luck. Davis put a kick up field, and the ball ended up getting away from Philippa Curley and Emily Downs picked up to score. Davis put the resulting conversion wide.

With just a few minutes left until the break, Huddersfield were able to get themselves back in it. Brown got the ball out wide, and managed to get out of a tackle before cutting inside to score under the posts. Townend converted to make it a four-point game.

But the final word of the half would go to Warrington. Sutherland managed to get through a gap and get the ball down for her second try. Davis kicked the conversion to open up a 10-point lead.

Huddersfield started the second half in the same way they started the first. They scored after Isabel Northrop managed to break through a couple of tackles and get the ball down. Townend converted to bring the Giants back within four points.

The Giants then took the lead for the second time just before the hour mark. Elychia Watson managed to break through the line and score. Townend converted from the touchline for a two point lead.

The Giants then moved further in front with just over 10 minutes to go. Northrop scored a crbon copy of her first try, attacking the line and getting through a gap to score. Townend converted to open up an eight-point lead.

Warrington then threw themselves a lifeline with the clock counting down. Danielle Bound managed to get over after a short dropout from Huddersfield went wrong. Davis converted to set up as grand stand finish.
