Sheffield Eagles have announced forward Scott Wheeldon will retire at the end of the 2021 season.

Wheeldon started his career at Hull FC, before also featuring for Hull KR, London Broncos, London Skolars, Castleford Tigers and a spell at Featherstone Rovers sandwiched between two spells at Sheffield.

During his career, he featured in the Super League Grand Final for Hull FC back in 2006, that ultimately lost 26-4 to a St Helens side that claimed the treble.

He also appeared at Wembley back in 2014 for Castleford, when they reached the Challenge Cup Final, although they lost against Leeds Rhinos.

On his decision, Wheeldon said: “I’ve been thinking about it from the start of this season.  I knew before the season started that it’ll probably be my last year to be honest.

“Last year was a bit funny with COVID so that didn’t really help me, not getting much training and everything being shut.

“I feel like from personal performances this year, they haven’t been where they were in the past so it’s another incentive to call it a day.”
